The Vulkaneifel is one of the geologically most interesting regions in Germany, but also offers visitors numerous other exciting highlights. A very special destination is the historic water mill in Birgel, where you can even spend the night. All romantics in particular get their money’s worth in the lovingly designed rooms. During a stay in the mill you shouldn’t miss visiting some of the most beautiful excursion destinations in the vicinity.

A particularly worthwhile highlight for nature lovers is the Dreimühlen waterfall, which is centrally located between the cities of Aachen, Koblenz and Trier. From Birgel, the waterfall can be reached in just under an hour’s drive. Since this is considered to be the most interesting waterfall in the entire Eifel, it should definitely be visited on a holiday in the area.
The Dreimühlen waterfall was named after the neighboring Dreimühlen castle ruins; Incidentally, this is also worth a visit. Only a few foundation walls have survived today – anyone interested in the history of castles and castle ruins should definitely visit these ruins.
The Dreimühlen waterfall is particularly interesting for all hikers, because it can be reached via two of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Eifel, the Geopfad or the Eifel Krimi hiking trail.
The Dreimühlen waterfall has been a natural monument and one of the most popular natural phenomena in the region since 1938. The waterfall, which falls over a twelve meter long and five meter high tufa wall, is not particularly large, but still interesting to look at and a popular photo opportunity.
Incidentally, this waterfall was created artificially when a railway line was built here in 1912.

After a hike to the Dreimühlen waterfall, you are sure to return to the historic water mill in Birgel, hungry and a little exhausted. Traditional dishes such as the tavern pan or the mill snacks are served in the cozy dining room – the ideal way to end an eventful day.
You can spend the night in one of the many rooms, which are mainly furnished in a half-timbered style, so that you can start a new tour of discovery the next day refreshed. Or maybe you’d just like to spend a day at the watermill and take advantage of one of the local leisure activities. How about taking part in a baking or mustard course – these are offered here on a regular basis and guests like to use them.
