Experience the largest technology museum in operation

Experience the living past in our historic Birgel watermill! On selected days, the Museum of Technology comes to life and takes you on a journey back to a time when mills, stationary engines and steam engines set the pace of progress.

Be amazed by the impressive variety of our fully functional machines: from the majestic steam engine, built in 1917, to the mechanical oil press, which has been pressing fresh oil for over 130 years, to the three-storey grain mill, which forms the heart of the mill. Every detail tells a story of craftsmanship, ingenuity and hard work.

All attractions can be admired in full operation

Steam engine

Marvel at the fully functional steam engine, built in 1917, with an output of 80 kW, which we dismantled and rebuilt in our mill.

Mechanical oil press

This oil press has been producing freshly pressed oil for over 130 years. It has a capacity of 300 liters per day for the production of rapeseed oil .

Grinding wheel

Alongside the oil press and the steam engine, the painting wheel is another historical tool that can be admired in full operation.

Mechanical lathe

Our lathe, powered by a steam engine, is suitable for milling, drilling and metalworking.

Senfmühle

In our mustard mill, powered by a 100-year-old Peugeot engine, we still produce our legendary mill mustard today.

Getreidemühle

Another highlight of our historic watermill is the flour mill. It extends over three floors. Marvel at the process of flour production from start to finish.

Water turbine

The water turbine is the heart of the grain mill. With 25 hp, it ensures that up to 70 quintals of flour can be milled in one pass.

Grinding machine

In our milling machine, grains are ground into meal and prepared for further processing.

Diesel generators & engines

Many of our attractions are powered by old generators and motors and give an impression of how manual labor has been replaced by machines.

Schöpfbrauerei

In our Schöpfbrauerei you can find out how the monks brewed beer over 150 years ago. Today we produce our delicious mill beer here.

Distillery

In the wood-fired schnapps distillery, our delicious mill schnapps is distilled with our own mash.

Children’s program: Baking bread

We will show you how bread is baked in a wood-fired oven in the traditional way. With our own mill flour, of course.

Children’s program: Making muesli

Together we will make your own muesli. Oat flakes are hand-hammered and then mixed with other ingredients.

Children’s program: Making mustard

We make your own mustard together with you, according to your taste and with our mill ingredients.

Children’s program: Oil pressing

No heavy equipment is needed to press oil. We’ll show you how to make your own cooking oil in just a few simple steps.
